The solar park outside Sjöbo is not just a renewable energy source for 3,000 households – it is also an ecosystem of its own.

The panels hold moisture in the soil, support biodiversity and keep grazing animals cool. The site was chosen so the land could carry on as pasture at the same time.
The panels stand raised above the ground, so the sheep can walk underneath. They have shelter when it is windy, cover when it rains and shade when it is hot.
The land used to be drifting sand that burned brown in dry spells. Now the panels give shade and soften the wind, so the soil holds its moisture better.
Biologists who surveyed the land before and after it became a solar park say biodiversity has increased. Pesticides and artificial fertiliser are no longer used.
Things actually grow better now than they did before.
